The Industrial Relations Court attends to matters in 2 stages. First at a prehearing conference and second at full hearing. At a prehearing conference parties attempt an out of court settlement and streamline issues for trial.  At full hearing parties are heard and judgment is pronounced.

Matters at the Industrial Relations Court are heard primarily at the Principal Registry, Blantyre and Lilongwe Registry, Lilongwe. The Industrial Relations Court does go on circuit in high employment prevalent districts such as Chikwawa, Mulanje, Zomba, and Thyolo in the Southern Region and Dowa, Salima, Kasungu, Nkhotakota, Mchinji in the Central Region and Mzuzu, Karonga, Rumphi in the Northern Region.
